Alfred McAlpine takes Enviros for £30m

ECI Partners, a UK mid-market buy out specialist, has sold Enviros, the UK’s largest independent environmental consultancy business, to Alfred McAlpine for £30m. This represents a money multiple of over 2.6x ECI’s investment.

Enviros helps organisations achieve competitive advantage through improved environmental and social performance. The business offers a broad range of services through its four divisions; Climate Change, Risk and Resource Management, Corporate Services and Land and Water. The Group was founded in 1995 through the combination of leading consultancies within the industry.

ECI backed the MBO of Enviros in 2001. Since then, the business has been strategically aligned behind the Enviros brand and developed into the largest independent full service environmental consultancy group in the UK. Enviros now a boasts blue chip client list which includes The Carbon Trust, BP, Kellogg’s and several government departments including the MOD and DEFRA.

ECI provided operational and financial support to Enviros throughout the investment period and introduced new management to the business. In 2003 Andrew Vaughan was appointed Chairman, Barry Newby as CEO and Andrew Smith as CFO.

Chris Watt, director ECI Partners, said:

“We identified Enviros as a well positioned business within a rapidly growing market benefiting from strong regulatory and legislative drivers. Following the introduction of an outstanding management team, the financial performance of the business improved substantially to become one of the sector’s leading players. This exit is the 6th from our 2000 vintage fund, ECI 7, and it cements the exceptional returns achieved by that fund for its investors.”

Barry Newby, CEO, adds:

“I would like to thank ECI for supporting the business both financially and through their strategic and operational support. We are looking forward to continuing our success with Alfred McAlpine.”
