Carlyle gets top analyst

Michael Wand, top ranking European software analyst, joins The Carlyle Group as director for Software Infrastructure investments within Carlyle Europe Venture Partners. Carlyle Europe Venture Partners is a A730 million fund that focuses on investing in core infrastructure technologies and services, specifically: communications technologies, communications services, software infrastructure, online business services, and online financial services.

Wand was ranked No1 by the 2001 Reuters Survey (European Larger Companies) in the new category Internet Software & Services, following the same rating in Reuters European Smaller Companies (Technology) survey in 2000 and No1 by Extel for “Understanding the new economy”.

Wand was previously with Deutsche Bank, where he was head of European Internet research leading a team of six analysts covering companies emerging in: infrastructure, portals, e-tailing, and e-finance.

Prior to Deutsche Bank, Wand worked at Paribas, where he was responsible for establishing the German country research team for equities, and then built the bank’s technology research effort from scratch and became senior European Software Analyst at Paribas.

“Michael is a valuable addition to our team, bringing with him deep insight into the software landscape and a strong network among European technology entrepreneurs,” said Jacques Garaialde, managing director leading the Carlyle Europe Venture Partners fund. “In the current environment I believe it is more important than ever to create teams dedicated to specific sectors of the technology market. By adopting this concentrated focus we will source and execute strong deals in Europe.”

Carlyle’s European Venture team has 11 investment professionals. In March, Wouter Moerel joined as director for Communications Services, and Claudio Giuliano joined as a senior associate for Communications Technology.
