Ciena scoops up World Wide PacketsCiena Corp. (Nasdaq: CIEN) has agreed to acquire World Wide Packets, a Spokane Valley, Wash.-based maker of Ethernet access products. The deal is valued at about $290 million, including $200 million in cash and 3.4 million shares of Ciena common stock. World Wide Packets has raised about $130 million in total VC funding since 2001 from such firms as Azure Capital Partners, Northwest Venture Associates, Madrona Venture Group, Telesystem-Argo Global Capital and Entrepia Ventures. Goldman Sachs advised World Wide Packets on the deal, while Ciena was advised by Morgan Stanley.

GSI acquires e-Dialog for $157M
GSI Commerce Inc. (Nasdaq: GSIC) has agreed to acquire e-Dialog Inc., a Lexington, Mass.-based provider of email marketing solutions. The deal is valued at $157 million, including $147.8 million in cash and $9.2 million worth of restricted GSI Commerce shares. It is expected to close within the next 30 days. E-Dialog has raised about $20 million in VC funding since 1999 from such firms as Commonwealth Capital Ventures and Flagship Ventures.

Teva buys CoGenesys for $400MTeva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Nasdaq: TEVA) has agreed to acquire CoGenesys Inc., a Rockville, Md.-based developer of peptide- and protein-based medicines. The deal is valued at $400 million in cash, and is expected to close by the end of the second quarter. CoGenesys raised a $55 million Series A round in June 2006 from New Enterprise Associates, OrbiMed Advisors, Red Abbey Venture Partners and former parent company Human Genome Sciences Inc.

Applimation nabs Gamma Enterprise
Applimation Inc., a Chicago-based provider of enterprise data management solutions, has acquired Gamma Enterprise Technologies, a provider of application data management software for SAP environments. No financial terms were disclosed. Gamma had raised about $10.7 million from ArrowPath Venture Capital and Palomar Ventures. Applimation is also VC-backed, having raised more than $9 million in funding from Battery Ventures, JMI Equity, RPM Ventures and M Group.

Dell seals deal for EqualLogic
Dell has completed its acquisition of EqualLogic, a Nashua, N.H.-based provider of SAN solutions specifically optimized for virtualization, for about $1.4 billion in cash, one of the largest acquisitions for a VC-backed company announced last year. EqualLogic had raised $52 million in VC funding since 2001 from such firms as Charles River Ventures, Sigma Partners, Focus Ventures and TD Capital Ventures. In related news, EqualLogic withdrew its registration for a proposed $125 million IPO.

PayPal purchases Fraud Sciences
PayPal, a unit of eBay, has agreed to acquire Fraud Sciences Ltd., an Israel-based provider of online credit card-not-present fraud detection, for about $169 million in cash. Fraud Sciences had raised $11 million in a Series B round last October from BRM Capital and Redpoint Ventures.

Imeem dials up Anywhere.FM
Imeem Inc., a Palo Alto, Calif.-based social media network, has acquired Anywhere.FM, a San Francisco-based Web music player and online radio service. No financial terms were disclosed. Anywhere.FM had raised seed capital from individual investors and Y Combinator. Imeem raised about $5 million from Morgenthaler Ventures.

Francisco buys AdvancedMDFrancisco Partners has acquired AdvancedMD Software Inc., a Salt Lake City-based provider of Web-based medical practice management solutions. No financial terms were disclosed. AdvancedMD had raised about $20 million in VC funding since 1999 from such firms as Domain Associates, Windward Ventures and Hunter Capital Group.

Calista sells to MicrosoftMicrosoft Corp. has acquired Calista Technologies, a San Jose, Calif.–based provider of graphics technologies for desktop and presentation virtualization solutions. No financial terms were disclosed. Calista had raised about $5 million in VC funding since 2006 from Greylock Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
