Industri Kapital is a leading European private equity firm. Industri Kapital. Including its predecessor operations, it started its activities in November 1988 with the first closing of its first fund (Industri Kapital 1989) on the August 11, 1989, with total commitments of E109 million. The Industri Kapital group became independent through its own buyout from SE Banken in 1993, retaining the investment management agreements of the first fund with the consent of all its investors.
As a dynamically growing private equity firm Industri Kapital pursues its mission of creating long-term value for its portfolio companies. Industri Kapital believes value is created through substantive, real and lasting improvement of performance of a business, rather than purely through financial restructuring. To achieve such improved performance, it focuses on the fundamentals in business management: sharpening strategy, improving operations and carrying out industry restructuring steps. On average, the profits of the companies in which Industri Kapital has invested have nearly doubled during its period of ownership. The philosophy is to work closely with management to achieve improved performance. For those who are involved in Industri Kapital’s investments, an environment is created with professional and financial rewards that match the challenge. Having management as partner owners in the business is an important aspect of this.
Industri Kapital typically invests in mid-sized to large non-core divisions or subsidiaries of larger groups, as well as family businesses. In some cases it has acquired publicly listed companies. Since 1989, Industri Kapital has made the majority of its investments in the manufacturing, retailing and service industries. It has also invested in the food industry, specialised process industry as well as the media and building materials sectors.
With strong focus on value creation through improved business performance, Industri Kapital believes that acquiring and developing businesses requires intimate knowledge of local markets, culture and management, combined with an understanding of international markets. The multidomestic approach involves local professionals from eight countries with a wide variety of cultural and professional backgrounds working out of offices in Hamburg, London, Oslo and Stockholm.
The last 12 months have been exciting for Industri Kapital. Fundraising activities were successfully completed and Industri Kapital significantly broadened its investor base with leading institutional investors. Among these investors, approximately 40 per cent originate from the Nordic region, 30 per cent from the rest of Europe and the remaining 30 per cent from the rest of the world, mainly the US. Industri Kapital has increased the number of investment professionals in all offices to a total of 31. The Industri Kapital 2000 Fund has completed seven acquisitions and in total, four realisations have been completed or announced.
