NVCA, partners with StartUpHire to track jobs data

The National Venture Capital Association last week announced that it has partnered with StartUpHire, a provider of a job search engine, to collect data on venture-backed job openings nationwide.

Launched earlier this year, Vienna, Va.-based StartUpHire currently lists more than 10,000 jobs at more than 2,500 U.S. companies that are backed by venture firms. The site provides a search engine allowing users to filter listings by industry, geography, functional area and even investor.

“I think 10,000-plus jobs is pretty impressive in this climate,” says Steve Fredrick, a general partner with Grotech Ventures. “It says the economic engine of venture capital is alive and well despite challenging times.”

Fredrick—who advised StartUpHire on its creation, but neither he nor Grotech are investors in the company—adds that the site does more than help portfolio companies attract talent. Fredrick says that StartUpHire also provides venture investors with the means to easily add a careers section to their websites, listing all jobs across their portfolio. Fredrick says that investors can also use StartUpHire to stay better apprised of portfolio hiring needs beyond the executive level.

For instance, late last week, Intel Capital was listed tops among venture investors with 338 job vacancies listed across its portfolio companies. Accel Partners (312 job listings) was second, followed by Oak Investment Partners (294), Sequoia Capital (288) and Draper Fisher Jurvetson (262).

A snapshot of the jobs listed on StartUpHire show that 31% of the jobs are in the software industry, 18% in IT services, and 8% in business products and services. California hosts 37% of the jobs listed, followed by the Mid-Atlantic region at 15% and Massachusetts at 10 percent.

The NVCA plans to use data from StartUpHire to track ongoing employment trends and chart the contribution of the companies to economic recovery and new job creation.

Mark Heesen, president of the NVCA, says that the jobs listed on StartUpHire will help showcase the contribution that VC-backed companies make to the economy.

“There has never been a better time for a service that connects job seekers to high growth companies that need exceptional talent,” he says.
