• DavidOrfao has joined Boston-based private equity firm General Catalyst as a manager. With the help of partners Joel Cutler, David Fialkow, William Fitzgerald and John Simon, Orfao will lead the firm’s newest investment fund General Catalyst II. The GCII fund will focus on early-stage investment opportunities in the software, communications, commerce-enabling and Internet infrastructure sectors. Orfao is the former chief executive officer of Allaire Corp.

• Robert Kim has joined Earlybird, an international venture capital fund with focus on information technology, telecommunications, life sciences and converging technologies, as an associate in its California offic. Prior to the appointment, Kim had been with Carl Zeiss Ophthalmic Systems, most recently as director of business development, and prior to that as a senior scientist.

• Heiner Sussner has been named partner at Miramar Venture Partners. Sussner currently serves as senior managing director at H&Q Asia Pacific, a private equity firm. He will leave H&Q mid-month to focus on Miramar, which is currently investing its first fund. Prior to joining H&Q Asia Pacific, Sussner was chief technology officer at Phase Metrics, a venture-backed data-storage company. Miramar Venture Partners’ first fund has raised $75 million so far and expects to close at $100 million by year’s end.

• Dave Segre has rejoined Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, a technology law firm, as a partner. Working out of the firm’s Palo Alto, Calif. office, Segre will provide expertise in general corporate financings and mergers and acquisitions to technology, Internet, life sciences and other growth companies. Previously, Segre was a senior vice president of corporate development with San Jose’s fusionOne, Inc., a privately held provider of Internet-based software. and services.
