Carlyle hires Musallam, Brown

Walid Musallam

has agreed to join The Carlyle Group to help build up the Washington, D.C.-based firm’s Middle East and North Africa operations. He previously was CEO of the Abu Dhabi Investment Co.

Separately, Pauline Brown has joined Carlyle as a managing director in the firm’s consumer and retail group. She previously was with Avon Products Inc., serving as senior vice president for corporate strategy and global business development.

Weinstein joins Novartis

Steve Weinstein

has joined Novartis Venture Fund as a managing director in the venture firm’s Cambridge, Mass.-based office. Novartis invests in health sciences from a $100 million fund. Weinstein previously was a principal with Prism Venture Partners.

Foundation promotes Moldow

Foundation Capital has promoted Charles Moldow to general partner. He joined the firm as a venture partner in 2005, before which he was an executive with Tellme Networks.

Helix adds Felton

Wanda Felton

has been named a managing director with Helix Associates, the private equity fund placement unit of Jeffries & Co. She founded private equity advisory Map Capital Advisors, and before that worked on the fund placement team at Credit Suisse and as a managing director for Hamilton Lane.

Sofinnova adds partner

Olivier Sichel

has joined Sofinnova Partners as a partner. He is the former chairman and CEO of Wanadoo, a France telecom company. Sofinnova recently closed on $375 million for its seventh fund.

Karp resigns

Allan Karp

has resigned as co-CEO of Apax Partners U.S. Also resigning is Chris Reilly, head of the firm’s retail and consumer group.
