U.S. coal producer Alpha Natural Resources has announced that its chairman of the board, Michael Quillen, has chosen not to stand for re-election and will retire as chairman. Quillen formed Alpha in 2002 and headed the company during its IPO in 2005. In early 2003, Quillen teamed up with private equity firm First Reserve Corp to acquire mining assets from Pittston, AMCI and Coastal Coal Co.

David Murphy was named the president and COO of Blue Coat Systems. He will report directly to Greg Clark, Blue Coat’s CEO. Blue Coat, which provides Web security and WAN optimization services, is a Thoma Bravo portfolio company.

John Weber Jr., a founding partner at Laurel Capital Partners, has joined the board of directors of Tangent Energy Solutions Inc. He joins the board after a recent investment by Laurel Capital. Tangent is based in Kennett Square, Pa.
