Oregon Treasury private equity LP Sam Green to leave

  • Veteran Oregon PE officer Green to leave by June 30
  • Has worked at Oregon agency since 2008
  • State’s PE team has seen turnover in recent years

Sam Green, a veteran private equity investment officer with Oregon State Treasury, is leaving at the end of June, a spokesman confirmed for Buyouts.

Green resigned as of June 30, James Sinks, the spokesman, said. The system will appoint a successor but hasn’t yet begun the search, he said.

Green declined comment on his plans.

He joined the treasurer’s office in 2008; previously, he spent 19 years at Washington State Investment Board. He also was a PE-investment officer at Washington State, his LinkedIn profile shows.

Green was a member of Oregon’s veteran PE team, which has seen several high-profile departures in recent years.

The investment team within the treasurer’s office invests the assets of Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund, including a private equity portfolio with a fair market value of more than $14 billion.

The Treasury office’s longtime head of PE, Jay Fewel, retired in 2013. At the time, the system restructured its program, promoting John Hershey to the new role of director of alternative investments. In this role, Hershey oversees the system’s entire alternatives portfolio, which includes private equity, real estate and opportunistic strategies.

The PE team at the time included Green and Andy Hayes. Hayes left the system last year and took a job at placement agency FIRSTavenue. Oregon is interviewing candidates to fill Hayes’s former role, Sinks said.

Oregon hired Michael Langdon from Hermes GPE in 2015 to take over the PE portfolio. Langdon led the private equity portfolio at Massachusetts Pension Reserves Investment Management Board for almost six years. He reports to Hershey.

Oregon has been one of the most active PE investors in the business. In April, the system reported making $900 million of commitments to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, EnCap Investments, GI Partners and Genstar Capital in the first quarter, Buyouts reported.
