Brown, Tulane Have Changes At Senior Level

Endowment: Brown University

Assets Managed: $2.8 Billion (June, 2012)

PE Assets Managed: $670 Million (June, 2012)

PE Allocation: 24% (June 2012)

Chief Investment Officer (Appointed): Joseph Dowling III

At Tulane, which has a $1 billion endowment, Lodge has reported to Jeremy Crigler, the university’s chief investment officer. Tulane is unusual in that its investment office is located in Darien, Conn., far away from the university itself, which is based in New Orleans.

Another top-level appointment comes from Brown University, which named Joseph Dowling III as a vice president and chief investment officer, replacing Cynthia Frost, who retired at the end of 2012. Dowling will start his new responsibilities in Brown’s investment office in early June.

With $2.8 billion in endowment assets, Brown has the Ivy League’s smallest endowment, which is less than one-tenth the size of Harvard’s $30.7 billion — the world’s largest. Brown’s private equity allocation is 24 percent, representing $600 million.

“The consistent risk-adjusted growth of the endowment is a critical part of supporting the university’s goal of educating a diverse group of future leaders,” Dowling said in a prepared statement. Dowling graduated from Harvard and earned an M.B.A. there as well. The university said Dowling was unavailable to comment on his new role until he starts in June.

Prior to coming to Brown, Dowling managed a private investment partnership called Narragansett Strategic Partners.
