Continuing a trend begun in 2022, North American private equity fundraising slowed in the first quarter of 2024, as tight supply conditions remained an impediment to market activity.

Buyout, growth equity, venture capital, secondaries and other private equity funds raised $88 billion of capital by the end of March, down 34 percent from $133 billion a year earlier, according to Buyouts data. This marked the first time that quarterly inflows have fallen below $100 billion since 2020.

The number of fund closings declined more significantly, hitting their lowest point on a quarterly basis in at least five years. Totaling 276 in the first quarter, vehicles dipped 19 percent compared with Q1 2023.

BDT & MSD Partners’ $14 billion fourth buyout vehicle was the largest fund closed between January and March. Behind it was The Jordan Company’s $6.85 billion sixth buyout fund and Arlington Capital Partners’ $3.8 billion sixth buyout fund.
