Continuing a trend begun last year, North American private equity fundraising slowed in the first quarter of 2023, as tight supply conditions put a damper on market activity.

A total of $124 billion was raised by buyout, secondaries, venture capital and other PE funds between January and March, down 20 percent from the $155 billion secured a year earlier, according to Buyouts data. Capital raised in Q1 2023 was also 16 percent below the $147 billion of Q4 2022.

The number of funds closed fell even more sharply in the first quarter. Some 149 PE vehicles were wrapped up during this period, down 49 percent from a year earlier. Compared to Q4 2022, closings dropped by 9 percent.

A steeper decline in fund closings, relative to capital inflows, resulted in much larger pools in the first quarter. The average fund size was $866 million, well above recent annual averages, including last year’s $652 million.
