Seaflower Ventures, a Waltham, Mass.-based venture firm focused on early stage life sciences deals, appointed drug industry veteran Amin Ladak as principal to evaluate investment opportunities. Ladak was previously employed with FoldRx Pharmaceuticals, a venture-backed company in Cambridge, Mass. Before that, he was director of venture analysis at HealthCare Ventures. Seaflower has raised three investment funds totaling $55 million since its inception in 1993. The firm reportedly plans to raise a new fund in the range of $150 million this fall. Seaflower was in the news this week for backing drug developer Serenex Inc. The company raised a $30 million Series C round from Seaflower and other investors (see Week in Deals chart, page 12).

Spark Capital announced its official close of its inaugural fund with $260 million in limited partner commitments. The staff of the Cambridge, Mass.-based venture firm includes general partners Todd Dagres, formerly with Battery Ventures; Santo Politi, formerly with Charles River Ventures (CRV); Dennis Miller, formerly with Constellation Ventures; Bijan Sabet, a onetime entrepreneur-in-residence with CRV and who most recently served as VP of corporate development with GameLogic; and CFO Paul Conway, who once served as CFO of CRV.

Daniel Pryor has joined The Carlyle Group as a Washington, D.C.-based managing director on the firm’s industrial team. He previously served as vice president of strategic development for Danaher Corp. (NYSE: DHR).

Donald Haile has joined Fidelity Ventures as a venture partner. He previously served as chief information officer for Fidelity Investments.

Pierre Chappaz has joined Index Ventures as its first entrepreneur-in-residence. He will focus on the online services space. He previously served as founder of online shopping engine Kelkoo SA, and was president of Yahoo Europe.

London-based Kleinwort Capital Ltd., a private equity firm investing in the U.K. lower mid-market, appointed David Ramsey as an investment manager. Previously, Ramsey was at KPMG Private Equity Group for more than four years where he was associate director, overseeing commercial and due diligence for European mid-market and LBO transactions.

Gail Fitzpatrick, Farhaan Hassan and Cindy Young have joined Ritchie Capital Finance as managing directors in the firm’s technology and life sciences finance group. Fitzpatrick and Hassan will originate and structure debt transactions to VC-backed companies, while Young will be assigned to the group’s risk function, responsible for analyzing and underwriting new investment opportunities. All three had been with GE Capital Technology Lending.

Garrett Moran has joined The Blackstone Group as senior managing director and will take on some of the administrative duties managed by Mark Gallogly. Moran most recently served as president of MMC Capital.

Peter Seidenberg has joined MVC Capital as chief financial officer. He previously was a principal with Nebraska Heavy Industries LLC, a turnaround management middle-market buyout firm.

Patrick Coyne has joined Lincolnshire Management as a managing director in the firm’s new Atlanta office. He previously was vice president of corporate development with GWB USA Inc.
