Robert Bell has been named a venture partner with Intersouth Partners. He was most recently vice president of research at Glaxo Wellcome Inc.

Al Burgess has joined Mellon Ventures as a special advisor. He was previously a managing partner with Andersen Consulting, now known as Accenture.

Margaret Chan has been named a managing partner with Josephthal & Co. Inc., where she will focus specifically on private placements of debt and equity for middle-market companies. She most recently worked for Merrill Lynch & Co.

Bruce Dunlevie, a general partner with Benchmark Capital, will be relocating to the Silicon Valley-based venture firm’s London office for one year beginning this summer. In London he will be working with Benchmark’s European partners to evaluate new deal flow and strategies for portfolio companies.

Andrew Firlik has joined Canaan Partners as a venture associate. He is a physician specializing in neurological surgery and will join the Rowayton, Conn.-based firm’s health-care practice.

Brian Hayhurst and Allen Thygeson have joined The Carlyle Group‘s US venture group as a principal and managing director, respectively. Both will work out of the firm’s Washington D.C. office. Hayhurst was previously a general partner with Cintra Ventures, while Thygeson was an executive vice president with Wink Communications.

Joseph Josephson has joined Lazard Freres & Co. as a managing director in its San Francisco office. He was previously a managing partner with Bluevector LLC.

Stephens Sullens has joined Blackstone Group as a vice president in the firm’s alternative asset management group. He was previously a director with Citigroup‘s hedge fund center.
