Porn purveyors hijack Blueprint site

A Russian hacker briefly took control of Blueprint Ventures’ website earlier this month, Partner Bart Schachter says. The hacker turned the firm’s website into a link page for pornographic material.

The Blueprint partners were unable to receive email after the website went awry. “It’s a pain in the ass,” Schachter says. “It’s happening in Russia, so there’s no legislative or regulatory things you can do over there.”

The San Francisco-based firm responded by creating an adjacent Web address, www.blueprintventure.com, which has the “s” dropped off at the end of the URL. Similarly, users can reach the partners by directing email to (first name)@blueprintventure.com.

The team is working to negotiate a change of its DNS record with Register.com and hopes to have its original site back soon, Schachter says. “It’s basically like identity theft, but URL theft,” he says. He adds that the firm would be happy to consider financing a startup with a technological solution to the problem.

Despite the interference, at the end of last week, Blueprint sent out its annual holiday ecard featuring Gary Snoman. The comic Web greeting continues the saga of Snoman, who throws money onto the fire, calls Midas a chump and keeps offering the same advice: “Tell them to replace the CEO.” —Alexander Haislip
