American Surgical Assistants, a provider of outsourced surgical assistant services, has appointed Tom Kirk as chief executive officer. Kirk previously served as president and COO, and later CEO, of Hanger Inc. American Surgical Assistants is a portfolio company of Great Point Partners I.

Ascension Insurance has hired Miles Gurley as a commercial account executive at the company’s Greensboro, North Carolina, office. Prior to joining Ascension, Gurley worked as an account executive at an insurance brokerage firm in High Point, North Carolina. In his new position, Gurley will work on insurance and loss control efforts for clients in the construction and motor sports industries. Ascension Insurance is a portfolio company of Parthenon Capital and Century Capital Management.

The Great Courses, a developer and marketer of video and audio courses for lifelong learners, has appointed Charles Davis executive chairman of the company’s board. The Great Courses is the premier brand of The Teaching Company, a portfolio investment of private equity firm Brentwood Associates.

Mandalay Digital Group has added Jeff Karish and Rob Deutschman to its board of directors. Karish is the president of Windsor Media, a private investment company founded by Terry Semel, former CEO and chairman of Yahoo. Deutschman is vice chairman of Cappello Group, an investment banking firm. This announcement comes on the heels of Windsor Media closing a $1 million investment in Mandalay Digital common stock and warrants. Mandalay Digital is a global media and communications company headquartered in Los Angeles.

OMNIPLEX World Services Corp, a portfolio company of Altamont Capital Partners, has named Philip T. Sweeney as executive chairman. Sweeney will also serve as OMNIPLEX Holdings Corp’s chairman of the board. Also, Michael S. Santelli, who currently serves as the company’s COO, has been named president. Based in Chantilly, Virginia, OMNIPLEX World Services Corp is a provider of background investigations and security services

The Sopra Group, a European provider of IT services, said that Hélène Martel-Massignac, CEO of Caravelle, a French private equity firm that backs the Sopra Group, has resigned from the company’s board and as a member of its audit committee and compensation committee. The moves were acknowledged in a meeting chaired by Pierre Pasquier, who heads Sopra Group’s board of directors.

Source Photonics, a portfolio company of Francisco Partners, said it has named Doug Wright as president and CEO, effective immediately. Wright succeeds current CEO, Near Margalit, who will assume the role of the company’s chief product officer. Headquartered in Chatsworth, California, and with offices in China and Taiwan, Source Photonics is a provider of optical communication products.
