RingCube To Announce Series B

I’ve always believed that you should root root root for the home team. But as a graduate of San Jose State University,it’s been difficult to be a booster of thecollege.Till this last season, I can’t ever recall the Spartans winning more than two football games a year. And when it comes to entrepreneurship and innovation, the perception is that SJSU usually ranks third behind Stanford and Berkeley.

So todayI talked to RingCube CEO Shan Appajodu, who’s hoping to change all that. Come Tuesday, Appajodu is expected to announce that his nearly 3-year-old company has raised $15 million in a Series B funding from returning investor New Enterprise Associates and new backer Mohr Davidow Ventures. The deal brings the company’s financing to $16 million.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company sells MojoPac, a travel storage software platform that transformsusers’ iPods or other mobile devices into portable andcustomized PCs. Just install MojoPac on any USB 2.0 device, upload your applications and files, and you’re good to go.

Of interest to me, also, is that Appajodu andco-founder Mike Larkin are San Jose State grads.Sure, thethird co-founder, Kiran Kamity, hails from Stanford. And Appajodu acknowledges that our modestalma mater often takes a back seat to the other universities in the Bay Area, but he says that he’s been working with the school to get more graduates to tell their story.

“I think it’s a PR problem,” he says. “People from San Jose State are just not coming out to tell their stories.”
