San Diego County pursues new managers, international PE exposure in 2015

  • $10.3 bln pension tracks 17 new managers
  • Pursuing LatAm, Indian, Southeast Asian strategies
  • SDCERA has a 5.3 pct allocation to PE

“We have a strong pipeline of re-up opportunities,” said Yegin Chen, who leads SDCERA’s private equity program. “I’m expecting 12 of our managers to (return to market) with essentially the same type of funds.”

In a video recording of the meeting, Chen told the retirement association’s board he expects to invest in “only the top” managers returning to market.

Chen expects the $10.3 billion retirement association to pursue commitments with new managers as well. SDCERA is currently tracking opportunities with 17 new general partners, including funds that invest in Latin American, Indian and Southeast Asian strategies.

The San Diego County Employees Retirement Association valued its private equity portfolio at $527 million as of September 30, according to Chen’s presentation. The retirement association had a 5.3 percent allocation to the asset class as of the same date.
