Transitions: Stephanz Joins BAS Financial Sponsor Group –

Banc of America Securities LLC, a subsidiary of Banc of America Corp. (BAS), this month appointed Mark E. Stephanz to lead its Financial Sponsor Group, which provides financing to private equity firms in leveraged and strategic buyouts. Stephanz will report to Carter McClelland, head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Banc of America.

“I couldn’t be anymore excited about this,” Stephanz said. “We’re one of the first to approach the business from a dedicated financial sponsor standpoint when a lot of Wall Street firms did not have a lot of dedicated financial sponsors efforts.”

Prior to joining BAS in 1995, Stephanz served as senior corporate banking relationship manager for NationsBank, N.A. in New York.

A League of Their Own

According to Loan Pricing Corp. and Securities Data Co., Banc of America ranked first in the financial sponsor league table for the first quarter of 2000 with 23 deals and $5.5 billion in volume and also ranked first in the leveraged lending league table with 112 deals with a total volume of $23.2 billion.

The Financial Sponsor Group services financial sponsor clients by providing M&A advice, bank and mezzanine debt, high yield offerings, bridge finance, equity offerings and equity co-investments.

In February, Banc of America Equity Partners teamed up with Kooperativa Furbundet, the Swedish Co-operative Union, to launch a $292 million private equity operation for the Nordic markets (BUYOUTS Feb. 7, p. 41). And in November, BAS served as adviser along with Goldman Sachs & Co. in the acquisition of Sunshine Hotel Investors Inc. by Westbrook Partners SHP Acquisition LLC (BUYOUTS Nov. 22, p. 22).
