VENTURE CAPITAL – Gilde Agribusiness backs Oxford Natural Products

The Gilde Europe Food and Agribusiness Fund in late may invested GBP1.5 million (EURO2.25 million) in Oxford Natural Products ONP. Two-year-old ONP is a pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and technology company focused on developing plant-derived products with potential patent protection.

Variability is the principal barrier to commercialising pharmaceutical and neutraceutical products derived from natural sources. To combat this problem, ONP has developed Total Quality Profiling, TQP is a combination of plant science, chemistry and biology designed to offer a viable approach to meeting the quality control standards demanded by regulatory authorities. ONP, which has global ambitions, formed subsidiaries in Japan and Singapore earlier this year in partnership with, respectively, Sosei and Eu Yan Sang International holdings. ONP is now considering forming a subsidiary or joint venture in the US as its next logical move.

The Gilde investment will, ONP says, enable the company to maintain the momentum on its global expansion strategy. Gilde is the company’s first major institutional investor.
