Among the contributors to the tally was Silver Lake. The technology-focused firm closed its latest vehicle, Silver Lake Partners IV, at $10.3 billion, well ahead of its $7.5 billion target. The firm is working with Michael Dell in a $24.4 billion deal to take Dell Inc. private.

On the deals front, Thomson Reuters, the publisher of Buyouts, counted 75 private equity deals closing in April with U.S. sponsors, bringing the total for the year to 386. Those that reported terms added $1.8 billion in transaction value, lifting that total to $30.5 billion, up from $13.8 billion at this point in 2012.

Among the highlights from last two weeks: Berkshire Partners closed $2 billion purchase of Lightower Fiber Networks while The Carlyle Group, Stone Point Capital LLC and others closed the $631 million acquisition of financial advisory shop Duff & Phelps.
