The major recent contributor to the total was Energy Capital Partners, which collected more than $5 billion in commitments within eight months. Energy Capital Partners III closed at $1.5 billion above its $3.5 billion target and is focused on control deals in the North American energy sector.

On the deals front, U.S.-based financial sponsors completed 65 deals in the first two weeks of April with a disclosed deal volume of more than $8.1 billion, according to Thomson Reuters, the publisher of Buyouts.

Sycamore Partners LLC had the largest deal when it acquired the entire share capital of The Jones Group Inc, a New York-based manufacturer and wholesaler of apparel, for $15 in cash per share, including the assumption of an undisclosed amount in liabilities, in a leveraged buyout transaction that valued the company at almost $2.2 billion.
