Firms & Funds

The past couple years have brought big changes to the seed market. The number of seed deals is down, the number of funds is up, and both round sizes and ownership targets have spiked. First-time funds, be they from new shops or spin-outs, seem to be rising in prominence. A big reason for that is they outperform, probably stemming from nascent firms working extra hard to establish themselves. Investors also see opportunities to get in on the ground floor and establish strong long-term bonds.
As of October, 863 first-time funds are in the market, combining for $155.2 billion in targets. The majority, both in number (445, 51.6%) and volume ($62.4 billion, 40.2%) are focused toward North America.
