Former Pennsylvania LP joins Aegon USA Investment Management

  • Brandon Halm worked at Pennsylvania agency more than two years
  • Prior to that post, he worked at Calvert Street Capital
  • PE team at Pennsylvania pension depleted

Brandon Halm, former private-equity officer at Pennsylvania State Employees’ Retirement System, joined Aegon USA Investment Management as a director, according to a source and his LinkedIn profile.

Halm joined Aegon in March, his LinkedIn profile said. He worked at the retirement agency from 2013 till February. Prior to the Pennsylvania pension, Halm worked at Calvert Street Capital Partners from 2007 to 2013.

Halm’s role at Aegon is unclear and he did not return a request for comment Tuesday. No one at Aegon could be reached for comment.

Pennsylvania’s state pension system now has one person, David Felix, working on private equity. The head of private equity, Lauren Lenfest, retired in February. Another senior private-equity official, Michael Beblo, died last year. It’s unclear whether the system has hired additional staff for private equity.

The system also lost longtime real-assets chief David Kalman, who retired in 2015.

The system is waiting through a hiring freeze instituted by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf in October as state legislators tried to find common ground on a budget. That freeze has slowly melted and the system may be able to fill out the private-equity team.

“As a state agency, we follow the Commonwealth’s hiring procedures, and the recent hiring freeze has delayed that process a little,” a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania pension agency, Pam Hile, said in a prior interview. “Now that portions of the freeze have lifted, we are resuming reviewing applications.”

Hile did not return a request for comment.
