3Q Y2000 Venture Rankings

3Q Y2000 Venture Rankings

Please note: Venture Economics plans to release its first annual rankings of venture investors in February 2001.

Venture Economics/Thomson Financial November 20, 2000 announced its first-ever formal ranking of venture investors, showing Chase Capital Partners as the most active venture investor during the third quarter of 2000.

Chase was the top investor both in terms of dollar amount and number of deals, according to Venture Economics’ VentureXpert database. While Venture Economics collects data from numerous sources, its third-quarter rankings are based primarily on quarterly surveys distributed to venture investors. As such, investors who don’t respond to those surveys may not show up on the rankings.

Chase participated in 51 rounds for 51 separate companies, committing a total of $315.36 million last quarter. Chase’s average investment was more than $6 million per company.

Dollar Volume

Close behind Chase, the second-largest investor for the third quarter, in terms of dollars invested, was Madison Dearborn Partners, which committed $314.78 million in nine companies. Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Capital Partners held the third position, followed by New Enterprise Associates, Sprout Group, Softbank Venture Capital, CrossPoint Venture Partners, Crescendo Venture Management, and Mellon Ventures. With the exception of Madison Dearborn, which was boosted by its participation in a $540 million deal for Capital Source Holdings, every top-10 firm participated in at least 14 deals.

A year ago, during the third quarter of 1999, the three largest investors were TA Associates, Sequoia Capital, and Goldman, Sachs & Co.
