On the move, 5.1.2017 – Rhode Island pension gets new CIO from Goldman Sachs

PRIVATE EQUITY FIRMS

Federated Investors hired Bill Taki as CEO of Federated Investors Asia Pacific. The investment manager also named Bill Mukai managing director and head of Asia-Pacific client relationships while Hun Pil Yoe becomes managing director for South Korea. Taki, Mukai and Yoe previously worked at Phoenix Global Capital Management.

Gemspring Capital hired Aron Grossman as a principal. Grossman had been a principal at Rho Capital.

Madison Dearborn Partners named John Lewis an executive partner. Lewis’s responsibilities will include finding investment opportunities for MDP’s funds in the information-services sector. Lewis is former global president of Nielsen Holdings PLC.

Pala Investments: Joining the investment team are Jessica Fung as head of research and Justin Cochrane, who will be working on streaming and structured finance. Fung previously worked at BMO Capital Markets while Cochrane is a former executive vice president of corporate development at Sandstorm Gold.

Polaris named Rune Lillie Gornitzka associate partner, Simon Damkjær Wille associate director and Joachim Satchwell associate. Gornitzka joined Polaris in 2005, Wille came on board in 2010 and Satchwell joined in 2013.

Rockspring Capital appointed Michael Kastel director of investor relations. Kastel had been account manager at Microbial Discovery Group.

Star Mountain Capital hired Thomas L. Jones as a strategic personal investor and senior adviser. Jones currently is a managing director at Alvarez & Marsal. Star Mountain also appointed Isaiah Kacyvenski an industry adviser. Kacyvenski is a former player with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. He is co-founder and managing director of Sports Innovation Lab.

Warburg Pincus named Paul Maritz an industry adviser for its technology, media and telecommunications group. Martiz is currently executive chairman of Pivotal Software.

PORTFOLIO COMPANIES

AIM Aerospace, a portfolio company of Liberty Hall Capital Partners, named Patrick Russell senior vice president and chief operating officer. Russell previously was vice president of operation and supply chain management at Orbital ATK. AIM provides composite ducting, structural and interior parts for the aerospace industry.

AllOver Media LLC, the Minneapolis out-of-home advertising platform, named Marc Macias vice president of brand partnerships in Chicago. Prior to joining AOM, Macias was VP of strategic partnerships at Silver Chalice Ventures. AOM is backed by Audax Private Equity.

Banker’s Toolbox, backed by KKR-Accel, named Ashley Womack chief financial officer. Womack previously was senior director in the private equity performance improvement group at Alvarez & Marsal. Banker’s Toolbox, Austin, helps organizations manage risk and streamline compliance.

Bowie Resource Partners: Gene DiClaudio and Carlos Pons have been appointed co-CEOs. John J. Siegel, founder and chairman of this portfolio company of Galena Private Equity Resources Fund, becomes non-executive chairman. Bowie Resource, Louisville, Kentucky, produces bituminous coal.

EnsembleIQ, a portfolio company of RFE Investment Partners, hired Ronda Hughes as vice president of digital media. Hughes had worked at UBM Americas. EnsembleIQ is the Chicago business-to-business media, information and research resource for the retail industry.

Nellson LLC, backed by Kohlberg & Co, tapped Martha Hudak-Roos vice president of quality and food safety. The company also named Jack Spallone senior director of corporate purchasing. Nellson is the Anaheim, California, nutritional bar and powder provider.

Varsity Brands, portfolio company of Charlesbank Capital Partners and Partners Group, named Adam Blumenfeld CEO. For the past decade, Blumenfeld has served as CEO of Varsity Brands’ BSN Sports division. Varsity Brands owns student sports brands.

SERVICE PROVIDERS

Campbell Lutyens: The placement agent appointed Gordon Bajnai chairman of its global advisory board. Bajnai is former prime minister of Hungary. He also was group chief operating officer at Meridiam Infrastructure.

Commerce Street Capital: The Dallas investment bank hired Annika Cail as vice president. Cail previously was director of marketing and business development at 24Q.

Cowen Group named Todd Coleman and Kevin S. Manning managing directors for its investment banking team. Coleman was at Piper Jaffray and Manning at BMO Capital Markets.

CyrusOne, a data center REIT, appointed Jonathan Schildkraut executive vice president and chief strategy officer. He was senior managing director in equity research at Guggenheim Partners.

Duff & Phelps: Joining the valuation and corporate finance adviser’s healthcare M&A advisory practice are Phil Smith as managing director and Adam Stormoen as director. Both are based in the Minneapolis office.

First Capital Real Estate Trust hired Stephen M. Johnson as chief financial officer. Johnson was head of equity volatility trading for Asia at DRW Holdings.

Houlihan Lokey hired Michael Siano as a director in the healthcare group. Siano previously was a director in the healthcare investment banking group at Deutsche Bank.

JMP Securities named Gavin Slader head of M&A. Slader, a managing director at the investment bank and alternative asset management firm’s San Francisco headquarters, had been head of technology M&A.

KKR: Pillarstone, the platform that the U.S. private equity firm set up to buy or manage non-core bank assets in Europe, hired Mark Knight as a partner and general counsel. Knight was a partner in the European restructuring practice at law firm Kirkland and Ellis in London.

Lincoln International hired Brent Williams and Brendan Murphy as managing directors for the firm’s special situations and restructuring practice. They’d previously worked in Teneo Capital’s restructuring practice.

Mizuho America: Alexander Lim joined as a managing director in healthcare investment banking in the San Francisco office. He most recently served as a managing director, healthcare investment banking, for Oppenheimer & Co in the city.

Signal Hill: The investment bank and adviser appointed Daniel Graves head of sponsor coverage. Graves succeeds Franklin Staley, who moved back into a transaction leadership position. Graves’ resume includes senior banking positions at Salomon Brothers, Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch.

LIMITED PARTNERS

Rhode Island hired a senior Goldman Sachs Group executive as chief investment officer to oversee its $7.9 billion pension fund. Alec Stais was a managing director at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, where he helped match smaller pensions and endowments with investment staff in the Global Portfolio Solutions Group. He’d worked for Goldman for 21 years.

PROMOTIONS

Edge Capital Partners promoted Whit Davis, Paul Robertson and Dennis Sabo to partner. Will Skeean, a partner and chair of Edge Capital’s investment team, has relocated to the firm’s Dallas office.

Stella Point Capital promoted Robert Jahn to managing director. Jahn joined the New York PE firm in 2012.
