Steve Lucas, head of Marketo, remembers the first time he met Robert Smith, founder, chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners. It was July 2016. Lucas, a sales and marketing executive with a strong product background, was looking for his next career move. He had spent several years at SAP, most recently as president in the enterprise platform and analytics.
